After greengrocer Mehmet Üsker is murdered, police detective Inspector Menemenci is put on the case. At the same time, detective Vera Gemini is on the lookout for a former foreign legionnaire who, however, has been presumed dead for years. It soon turns out that there must be a connection between the two cases.

Within a short time, three teenagers were found hanged. First, the investigators think of suicide, but the third girl was beaten before she died. In addition, the death of the young people was completely surprising.

Fatherless pre-teen Justus happily moves with ma, vet Marita Engstroem, from Stockholm to Hallberg, where she gets a job in his late dad's best friend Marius Bengtson's stud-farm. Mysterious recluse Paul Sommerfeld, actually an anonymous, shy author, meets them trough his wounded dog. Justus bonds with the dog, thus becomes friends with Paul and plays Cupid for him and his ma.

When commissioner Brunetti's wife's college student Claudia Leonardo asks his help to see if an innocently convicted 'war criminal' can be rehabilitated, he refers her to a barrister. When she's murdered, he investigates. It turns out her grandmother asked her to help clear the case of her husband, convicted for trading in war crime-obtained paintings. The case involves fake documents and political links over generations, as well as family ties going up to the 'pretore', the very old chief of police. Meanwhile the vice-pretore is enchanted by a new, female commissioner, of 'good stock', and allegedly an expert in far eastern methods, albeit little more then feng-shui.
